Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is probably the most common question asked when someone is considering a birth center or home birth. Research performed over the last 35 years has provided overwhelming statistics that there is a lower rate of surgical intervention, fewer complications for mother and baby, lower birth injuries, and lower death rates.

When you choose a birth center or home birth you are choosing to have a woman-centered birth experience. This means that the mother and father work together to create the safest and happiest experience for them and their baby. Mom gets to choose who will attend the birth in the setting of a quiet and peaceful environment. Birthing this way is a popular choice and has been on the rise over the past few years, due to many benefits, including safety.

  • You do not need to see an OB while you are pregnant and seeing one of the midwives from the Katy Birth Center. However, there may be situations where your midwife recommends a visit to the obstetrician. Midwifery is a collaborative practice that involves: midwives, nurses, obstetricians, pediatricians, and other specialists as needed.

Midwifery is different from obstetrics. Midwifery care is provided by professionally trained midwives who practice a wellness and holistic approach to pregnancy, birth and women’s health. Midwifery care focuses on the promotion of health and the enablement of individual empowerment.

  • During labor, if any complications arise, we will transport the mother to the nearest hospital. Prior to arrival the midwife will speak to the hospital staff about what is happening and will stay with you until your baby is delivered. This situation does not happen often, but your midwife is fully equipped to assess any adverse situations, and will consult the specialist/physician and transport to the hospital if the need arises.

  • Many women are concerned about the pain of childbirth and if they can handle the rigor of a natual birth? We are often asked how we can help them cope with the pain of labor during the natural birth process. The prospective mothers will learn through birth classes and education on how to relax and understand each phase of labor. Your birth team will be able to use proven methods to help women cope with pain. Our birth pools promote relaxation which reduces pain. 100% of the women have a peaceful birth place and are encouraged to move around while eating and drinking. In addition we have medication for rest and nausea. Electrical stim for back labor, and nitrous gas for relaxation and pain management if needed.

  • Familiar surroundings help the mother feel comfortable and safe during labor and birth, minimizing stress and fear.

    • The mother determines the birth atmosphere.

    • You don’t have to deliver in a bed

    • No belts or monitors

    • You can choose to be in the water

    • Less chance of illness due to exposure to hospital-borne infection.

    • No awkward moves from room to room.

    • Few or no routine interventions.

    • No separations from the people and setting that empowers her.

  • Katy Birth Center is licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and is under constant supervision of the DSHS. KBC has to follow DSHS code of Health and Safety and birthing center rules as stipulated by the state. KBC is regularly audited by the DSHS and any out of normal situations have to be reported and evaluated by the state. If any adverse situation appears, a corrective action has to be put in place or KBC could lose its license to operate. The license has to be renewed every two years, and will only be renewed if the birth center is in good standing with DSHS.

  • "Katy Birth Center has such a special place in my heart. The midwives here are patient, kind, warm and intelligent women that are passionate about caring for mamas and their babies. Prenatal appointments were something I always looked forward to. I was given as much time as I needed to chat through whatever was on my mind and that made me feel so cared for. If something came up that couldn’t wait between appointments, I utilized the client care portal to message my midwife and received quick, thorough responses. My midwife honored all of birth plan desires and truly had a servant’s heart throughout my entire labor. The way she helped me and encouraged me was so unforgettable, it brings me to tears. The support I received postpartum was also very special, as it is such a sensitive time. My midwife was gracious, encouraging and available to me whenever I needed her after I gave birth. I truly can’t put into words how grateful I am to have had my VBAC at KBC. "

  • "The Katy Birth Center is a hub for the most fabulous midwives in the Greater Houston Area. We are a truly blessed city to have Shani! Sara! Melissa! And their entire team. As a fellow midwife, I am picky, and let me tell you! I would feel comfy picking them over and over again."

  • "Top-notch personalized care, and so much birth/health education provided as well. I always felt so taken care of, listened to, and respected. I had five beautiful peaceful, prayerful births here, and I cannot praise all of the midwives and ladies at KBC enough."

  • "I can’t write enough praises for the Katy Birth Center! Every appointment is so intentional - I was cared for emotionally, physically, and mentally. This team has so much to offer in education, years of knowledge and experience, access to natural supplementation, individual care, and freedom for choice in my medical decisions. In my opinion, this is the only place in the Houston area you will find such Christ centered and holistic care for pregnancy and birth. We had such a positive first pregnancy and birth experience and now a healthy and happy baby boy! Forever grateful!"

  • "We LOVED the Katy Birth Center! We had Melissa as our midwife and she was nothing but supportive and very knowledgeable the entire pregnancy, labor and postpartum period. We felt very cared for during our time there, it felt like family going in to the birth center and now it feels so weird to not be there anymore. Some of the things we loved: thorough and long appointment times that helped cover all basis/any questions we had, numerous resources, very personable, and very informative. My husband and I agreed that this was perfect for us, especially as new parents. Now we have our sweet baby girl with us and get to keep sharing our stories from the birth center with our friends. We are truly grateful!"

  • "I had my dream pregnancy and delivery because of Katy Birth Center. Sue was my midwife and she was so caring throughout the entire journey. The entire staff is amazing and I felt very taken care of. The birth center itself felt “homey” and I was always so comfortable there during all of my appointments. The delivery itself was exactly what I had wanted and imagined and my needs were always met. I can go on and on about my birth story but trust me when I say you are in good hands here!"

    — Karon Lee (★★★★★ Google Review)

  • "I gave a FIVE star rating only because Google won’t let me give SIX. Melissa Nealy is the most unbelievably awesome midwife, possibly ever. While I’m sure that all the midwives at KBT are super legit, she gets my wife’s and my vote as the best!!!! Shani was an amazing help at the birth of our son, as was Margo. The ladies at this place are the best you’ll find anywhere!"
